A delicious addition to breakfast recipes, snacks, and treats, this Paleo Pear Butter recipe is not only easy to make but will also leave your house smelling wonderful! Ready in about an hour and good for up to one week, this recipe is where the flavor’s at! {Paleo}
I’m not gonna lie, friends. I hadn’t made a fruit butter of any kind until now. It seemed like a cool idea, but I wasn’t sure I was up to the task. I mean, make my own fruit butter? Who am I? Laura Ingalls Wilder? Not even close. I lead a pretty cushy life compared to what she experienced growing up. But it turns out making Paleo Pear Butter is actually quite simple. And it’s scrumptious, too.
How can it not be? Pears + cinnamon + honey = COUNT ME IN!
And since various types of pears are in season throughout the year, this is a fruit butter recipe to enjoy any time your heart desires. If you’d like to learn more about that, you might enjoy perusing Food Republic’s post, Know Your Pears and When They’re in Season. Pair your pear butter with muffins, toast, or donuts. Lather it onto a spoon and eat it straight up. Or use it as a dip. A quick search of the internet webs revealed recipes that include pear butter with baked goods. Sounds delicious, and, apparently, I need to add that to my culinary bucket list.
However you choose to enjoy your Paleo Pear Butter, though, you won’t be wrong. According to the second born, it is “precisely good.” So you have that assessment to guide your expectations.
Now let’s get down to business and make a batch, shall we?
Paleo Pear Butter ingredients
Mix and match your spices to get the exact Paleo Pear Butter flavor you want!
- Fresh pears. I start with two pounds of pears, peeled and sliced. But I also like to have a few extra on hand in case I over-spice the recipe and need to neutralize the flavor. And in that case, I would just cook or steam the extra pears for a few mutes to soften them. Alternatively, you can live dangerously and just add a few fresh pears to your blender if the spices are too strong in the initial batch.
- 100% pure honey and lemon juice. These ingredients bring out the best in the pears. Adjust up or down in amounts depending on how fresh and sweet the pears are.
- Cinnamon, ginger, allspice, and sea salt. I definitely add cinnamon, ginger, and a pinch of sea salt. For added pizzaz, I also sprinkle a little allspice on the top of the finished product, but that’s totally optional.
How to make Paleo Pear Butter
And now for the “how to” when making your own Paleo Pear Butter. Get ready for your kitchen to smell absolutely delightful!
- In a medium saucepan, combine the pears, honey, lemon juice, cinnamon, ginger, and sea salt, and bring to a boil. Then reduce heat to a low-medium setting and cook covered for about 40-45 minutes. Stir frequently to make sure the ingredients don’t burn. As the pears cook, you can also mash them a little to make the blending process in step four even easier.
- Next simmer for another 5-10 minutes uncovered. As a rule, cook uncovered closer to ten minutes if there is excess liquid in the pan and closer to five minutes if the mixture is already thickened and cooking hot.
- Remove from heat and let cool for a few minutes before transferring to a high-speed blender. Puree the ingredients in the blender until smooth. For a thicker butter, see BEST PRACTICES below.
- Store in a glass jar in the refrigerator for up to one week. Sprinkle with allspice just prior to serving, if desired
Paleo Pear Butter recipe best practices
Paleo Pear Butter is easy to make. But there are a few ways to get the most out of the recipe and to make sure it is flavored to exactly YOUR liking.
- Err on the side of smaller amounts. Start out with just 1-2 tablespoons of honey and small amounts of spices. Add more after blending, if necessary. A little bit goes a long way with these ingredients. How much sweetener and spice you use will also depend on how fresh the pears are.
- Drain excess liquid. I don’t have a lot of excess liquid when I make Paleo Pear Butter. But if your butter looks runny, pour it through a wire mesh strainer into a bowl. The thicker portion should remain in the strainer while the thinner, runnier portion will seep through to the bowl.
