Fresh (or frozen) blueberries. Fresh mandarin oranges. Oatmeal. Almond milk. Think gluten-free and dairy-free. Spiriteds, Blueberry Orange Oatmeal Smoothie is a healthy breakfast treat in a mug, a warm hug in a meal. It’s also an offshoot of one of my earliest recipes, Blueberry Oatmeal Smoothie with a Hint of Orange, beginning photography and all. I’m not even sure what camera I used, but I do remember feeling extremely proud of those pictures. The recipe was a warm hug then and it’s a warm hug now.
This comforting vibe is also a bonus if the current weather situation has your equilibrium in knots. Skies are gray, and it neither rains nor snows. I imagine this is how Jane Austen lived in England on many days, and whenever I read her books, I am wont to romanticize such dreary weather. Then, like the two-faced fan that I am, the minute I get some northern weather, I want to run for the hills.
Truthfully, I want Magnum P.I. weather. I want Jane Austen to live at Robin’s Nest. Well, not really, although that would be fascinating. Can you imagine the stories that would result? Higgins and Austen in the same abode? Magnum would be out solving some mystery, presumably at the behest of Higgins and on behalf of their esteemed guest. Well, it worked for Jessica Fletcher and Magnum, and they were in their bathrobes. So, I guess anything is possible. I basically want English countrysides with the Pacific Ocean and warm weather nearby. Is that too much to ask? Let’s not answer that. I’m being rhetorical. See, these are the stories that happen when the sun doesn’t shine, Spiriteds.
In the meantime, I’m reaching for comfort foods, filling foods that don’t take forever and a day to prepare. Foods that are satiating without being heavy. And this is one of them.
Blueberry Orange Oatmeal Smoothie isn’t sweet, but like Dairy-Free Strawberry Oatmeal Smoothie, the lack of sugary goodness is forgivable here because the final product is so absolutely worth it. I try to keep sweets to a minimum, M&M’s notwithstanding, and if you are trying to do the same, then this smoothie is up your alley. However, you can add 100% pure honey or agave nectar for a sweeter flavor, if you so desire.
But let’s talk ingredients, shall we? First, the blueberries. Fresh or frozen work just fine. I started with frozen and just slightly thawed (super yum), then moved on to fresh (also yum), and finally a combination of the two (pictured here, and still super delish). You can’t go wrong, Spiriteds. Blueberry Orange Oatmeal Smoothie is a treat for all seasons, no matter what is in bloom and no matter where the sun is.
As for oranges, I’m still a sucker for fresh mandarins. The oatmeal isn’t tricky either. I grab Bob’s Red Mill Gluten-Free Old-Fashioned Rolled Oats. And then there’s the milk. I love unsweetened almond milk, however I have also made it with sweetened rice milk. Worth. Every. Bite. Essentially, pick your favorite milk and blend.
Four ingredients. That’s all this beauty takes to succeed. Drink it through a straw. Eat it with a spoon. It doesn’t matter. Whatever you do, pour a glass of Blueberry Orange Oatmeal Smoothie, grab a book, and read your way to sunshine.
